At the Airport

Begin your travel on the right foot with these essential tips. A little preparation goes a long way in starting your trip stress-free!

Arrive Early

Arrive at the airport early enough to allow time for check-in, security screening, and boarding. Recommended arrival times vary by airline and airport, but generally aim for at least 2-3 hours before domestic flights and 3-4 hours for international flights.

Online Check-In

For domestic flights, many airlines allow you to check in online from anywhere with internet access. This typically opens 24 hours before your flight. Benefits of online check-in include seat selection (choose your preferred seat in advance), frequent flyer number (enter your FFN for mileage accrual), and baggage notification (inform the airline of your checked baggage to save time at the airport). Online check-in varies by airline and airport. Confirm with your airline whether online check-in is available for your flight.

Boarding Passes

Some airlines allow you to print your boarding pass at home, while others require you to obtain it at the airport. If printing isn’t available, keep track of the confirmation details provided at the end of the online check-in as these will aid in the airport check-in process. Many airlines offer electronic boarding passes. If available, you can check in online or via your mobile device and receive your boarding pass via SMS, email or a link. The electronic boarding pass will include a scannable barcode for checkpoints and gates. For domestic flights, bring your mobile device with the boarding pass and a valid ID.

Airport Check-In

If you haven’t checked in online, you can check in at the airport at a self-service kiosk or a check-in counter:

  • Self-Service Kiosks
    • Kiosks can be found in the check-in area (if questions arise, there may be flight personnel nearby to assist).
    • Follow the prompts on-screen and enter your booking information. The kiosk will print your boarding pass and baggage tags if you’re checking luggage.
    • After putting the baggage tags on your luggage, you can drop your checked bag at a designated bag drop location.
  • Check-In Counter
    • Find your airline’s counter and wait in line if necessary. Present your passport/valid ID, booking confirmation, and any luggage you wish to check.
    • The airline staff will assist you with checking in and printing your boarding pass.
    • If you have checked luggage, the staff will attach tags to your bags and drop them off for you.

If you checked in online and received an electronic boarding pass, simply present it on your mobile device at the check-in or security checkpoint. Ensure your device is charged and the boarding pass is easily accessible.

Baggage Check

Arrive early to allow time for baggage check-in, especially if you have multiple bags or are traveling during busy times. Remember to keep your luggage within the weight limits or be prepared to pay the overage fees. You may be asked to open your carry-on for inspection after going through security. Pack liquids according to the 3-1-1 rule (3.4 oz containers in one quart-sized bag).

Security Screening

After check-in, proceed to the nearest security checkpoint. Have your boarding pass and identification ready to present to security personnel. Once you make it through security, we recommend you head straight to your gate – some airports are big, and your gate might be farther than you think. Once you settle into your gate area, if you have enough time, feel free to explore the airport, get snacks, use the restroom, and stretch your legs prior to the flight.
